What to consider when having a masquerade party

What to consider when having a masquerade party

The masquerade evolved from the Venetian ‘Carnevale’ during the Italian Renaissance, and today the iconic masks are synonymous with debauchery. With thoughtful planning, a masquerade party is easy to do and a lot of fun!

They key is getting your guests to buy into the extravagance of the masquerade. Give them ideas of what you want them to wear by including images of a mask on the invitation, as well incentives to go all out (i.e. offer prizes for best dressed, most creative, best DIY etc). You could include a list of local costume shops, online retailers etc where they can purchase their masks and costume accessories from. Alternatively, you could provide masks at the door for your guests to choose from when they arrive.

As for your decorations, transform you venue/space with rich, bold colours, luxurious fabrics, mirrors, sparkly confetti, feathers etc.

Your entertainment should help set the tone for the party, going from soul/jazz as guests arrive to fun and upbeat as the night progresses. Request that your DJ plays all the crowd-classics to get everyone singing and filling the dancefloor. Mood lighting can really help set the atmosphere too, by spilling colour onto the walls and ceiling whilst the room remains mysteriously low-lit.

With sound planning, the party will be a great success, enabling you to relax and enjoy it just as much as your guests!
