Jen Mas has been a
pillar in the New York electronic music scene since
1997. She attended her first rave in 1995 and
became an avid promoter a couple of years
later. Shortly after organizing her first party she
decided she didn’t want to limit herself to solely
coordinating events, as she became fascinated by the
use of turntables. With her classical piano background
and her lifetime hobby of collecting vinyl records and
CDs, it was easy for her to begin her quest of
becoming a professional DJ. But she could never just
spin one style of music. She collected hardcore
techno, drum and bass, hip hop, hard trance, 80’s
dance, rock, and techno. And as she refined her sound,
her affinity for variety shined through.
Now, after
years of devotion behind the decks, her performances
are without
boundaries. She puts fire in your dancing shoes and
takes you through a journey of sound that is both
unpredictable and exhilarating. Her creative and
lightning-fast mixing and turntable trickery sets her
aside from the rest, and her unique style has landed
her gigs all across North America. And her rare talent
has not gone unnoticed, as she was voted the
16th top female DJ in the world by Shejay
magazine and was asked to join the Females Wit
Funk roster – showcasing the best female turntablists
worldwide.
Jen has created much hype with her “NYC Femcore”
series mixed CDs. They have gained her global
recognition and have helped open new minds to
appreciate the harder sides of electronic music.
She’s also released a plethora of other DJ mixes,
including a drum and bass mix, an 80’s dance mix, and
much more. She is currently working on original tracks of her own, which
you can now hear at her shows. She hopes
to become an experienced producer as well, and yearns
to make tracks that parallel her DJ creativity - to
enhance her original style. She is currently making
hardcore, and as her sound develops she will surely
delve into other genres as well, as she is one artist
without limits. And playing her own music has surely
ignited her performances, making her sets an even more
exciting and uplifting experience than ever before!
Amidst all her
current goals Jen still finds the time to remain
dedicated to her local scene by continuing to organize
events, from her smaller free parties to her
larger-scale shows. To do so she's formed strong
alliances with various local crews as well as building
a solid internal network with those she's invited
into her Vitus Crew family. She formed Vitus in 1999
after organizing several events in the area in 97/98.
And as the years have gone by, she’s gathered together
a stellar group of artists and friends that remain a
staple crew in today’s electronic music scene.
Jen is the Vitus Webmaster and also shares
graphic artist duties with Tracatak. She proves that
with time, energy, and perseverance you can take
things into your own hands and accomplish anything you
put your mind to, despite age, race, or gender. She's
also living proof that with the proper presentation
and approach you can get most people to appreciate and
accept something they previously may have not
understood. One of her greatest joys as an artist has
been to learn that she's changed people's perceptions
about hardcore and hard dance music in general. And
that alone has been her driving force since day one,
along with giving people a musical venting source that
is well needed in this crazy day and age.
She hopes to
continue on her path of musical and personal growth,
meeting new positive people to draw inspiration from,
and also inspiring others to contribute to the future
of electronic music as well - which in her opinion has
yet to blossom, especially here in the US.
Where this is
strength there is success for today; where there is
heart there is hope for tomorrow.
